Ouray School’s Approach to Personal Technology: Balance, Focus, and Respect

Personal technology device (PTD) includes any privately-owned portable technology device, including but not limited to cell phones, wearables, tablets, laptops, cameras, audio and/or video recorders and players, and all other hand-held electronic communication and data storage devices.

The Core of Our Policy:

  • Phones silenced, learning on: All PTDs must be silenced and properly stored during school hours unless a teacher specifically approves their use.

  • Use school tech: District-provided devices are available for educational purposes.

  • Face-to-face focus: We encourage real-time conversations and interactions—without the interruptions of screens.

  • Emergencies only: Phones may be used during school emergencies.

Storage Expectations:

During instructional time (including all class periods and designated academic activities), students must keep PTDs stored in one of the following:

  • Assigned locker

  • Backpack

  • Classroom wall pocket organizer

  • Other teacher-approved locations

PTD use during passing time is discouraged. Cameras and recording devices must never be used in private spaces like bathrooms.
