Save the Date: Parent Reunification Exercise May 17

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Ouray School believes that the safety of staff and students is our primary concern. Parents, students, and staff have shared through school surveys that the city of Ouray and Ouray School are safe, welcoming places. The school completes required readiness drills for fire and lockdown following the Standard Response Protocol. In recent drills, staff and students demonstrated proficiency and maturity in their actions.

Several years before the pandemic, Ouray School conducted an exercise to reunify students with parents, guardians, or emergency contacts. We follow the Standard Reunification Method that is a companion method to our emergency response protocols. It is time to rehearse this procedure again. While unlikely, there are a number of possible scenarios that could require this procedure. The most likely scenarios are fire or other safety issues within the building or a wildfire in close proximity to the city and school. Threats or acts of school violence are unfortunately other possibilities.

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 17, 2023, for our school-wide exercise. The exercise will take place at the end of the day and will require that a parent/guardian or listed emergency contact pick up their child. More information on the Standard Reunification will be shared in the coming weeks.

Please consider who you have listed as your emergency contacts. Parents can log into Alma, our student information system, and update their own contact information. Make sure that the school has updated cell phone numbers for parents/guardians and emergency contacts.
